This large NOC pin was produced for the nation of Kazakhstan for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. In regard to hockey, the Kazakh women competed in the women's Olympic hockey tournament for the first time during the 2002 Games, and thus this pin is included in my hockey collection. I have seen this pin sell for up to $50.00 USD, however, I believe the value is more in the $25.00 - $30.00 USD range.
During the 2002 Winter Games, I had the privilege of attending the women's ice hockey game between Kazakhstan and Canada on February 11, 2002, which the Canadians won 7-0. The remarkable thing about that game was the stunning performance put on not by the Canadians, but by the Kazakh goaltender Natalya Trunova (pictured above). In fact, she stopped 59 of the Canadians' 66 shots on goal . . . amazing! The best part of the game was after the final buzzer sounded when the Kazakh players surrounded their defeated goaltender and the crowd gave her a standing ovation. It was truly a moment when the camaraderie and sportsmanship that exemplify the Olympic spirit were undeniable.
