1998 New York Rangers Players' Nations Set
During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, the New York Rangers were represented on four different nations' teams in the Olympic hockey tournament. This pin set commemorates the Rangers' multi-national Olympic participation with four Rangers' pins depicting the Canadian, Russian, Swedish and United States flags. The set also includes a centerpiece "dangler" pin, the charm on which is the New York Rangers' Statue of Liberty logo.
As depicted below, there are two different charms available on the centerpiece pins.

1984 Zetra Hockey Venue Pin
This pin from the Winter Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, commemorates the use of the Olympic Hall Zetra as the venue for the hockey tournament in 1984. This pin was also available in a blue cloisonné and in bronze (copper), silver and gold colored die struck base metals. As with many pins from the 1984 Winter Games, the Zetra Arena pins are not easy to find, and for this reason I'd place their value at $12.00 USD.

1972 Soviet Union Commemorative 4-Year Champs
This pin was produced following the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan to commemorate the Soviet Union's ice hockey gold medals in the 1956, 1964, 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics. This impressive run of Soviet Olympic hockey dominance was broken up only by the United States' gold medal victory at the Squaw Valley, USA Winter Games in 1960. The Soviets again claimed the gold medal in 1976 at the Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. This pin has a value between $5.00 and $7.00 USD.

1998 UPS Airplane with Hockey Pictogram
This pin was produced for UPS, a worldwide Olympic partner, for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The pin includes a blue hockey pictogram on the tail section of the airplane (and curiously it also appears to include some summer Olympic athlete pictograms as well--perhaps a yellow weightlifter, pink kayaker and maybe even a green basketball player). Value on this pin is in the $7.00 to $10.00 USD range.

1998 Slovakian NOC Hockey Pins (Red)
Featured today are two red Slovakian NOC hockey pins from the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. This pin was also made in blue and white versions. The front views of these red pins are relatively identical. However this pin was made with two different fastner types: clutch & post and stick pin, respectively, as depicted on the backside views of the pins. I would value each pin at $20.00 USD.

1998 Japan Ice Hockey Federation Pin
Because Japan defeated the United States today in the World Cup soccer final, I thought I should write a post in honor of Japan. So today's pin comes from the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan and was produced for the Japan Ice Hockey Federation. During the 1998 Games, the Japanese men's hockey team finished in 13th place among the 14 competing nations, while the Japanese women's hockey team finished in 6th place out of the six competing nations. I would value this pin at $15.00 USD (though, incredibly enough, I have seen this one sell for $103.50 USD online).

1992 Unified Team Hockey Pin
During the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, several of the fifteen former Soviet Union republics joined together to compete as the Unified Team. Because the National Olympic Committees of these former Soviet republics had not yet been affiliated to the International Olympic Committee, they each used the Olympic Flag in place of their own national flags at the Opening Ceremony and at medals ceremonies, and the Olympic Hymn was played for gold medallists, including the Unified Olympic hockey team, which took the gold in 1992. This pin was used by the Unified Olympic hockey team during the 1992 Games.

2002 Kazakhstan NOC Pin
This large NOC pin was produced for the nation of Kazakhstan for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. In regard to hockey, the Kazakh women competed in the women's Olympic hockey tournament for the first time during the 2002 Games, and thus this pin is included in my hockey collection. I have seen this pin sell for up to $50.00 USD, however, I believe the value is more in the $25.00 - $30.00 USD range.
During the 2002 Winter Games, I had the privilege of attending the women's ice hockey game between Kazakhstan and Canada on February 11, 2002, which the Canadians won 7-0. The remarkable thing about that game was the stunning performance put on not by the Canadians, but by the Kazakh goaltender Natalya Trunova (pictured above). In fact, she stopped 59 of the Canadians' 66 shots on goal . . . amazing! The best part of the game was after the final buzzer sounded when the Kazakh players surrounded their defeated goaltender and the crowd gave her a standing ovation. It was truly a moment when the camaraderie and sportsmanship that exemplify the Olympic spirit were undeniable.

1980 Lions Club USA Hockey Pin
Entitled "Salute to the Hockey Stars", this monster sized pin was produced for the Lions Club to celebrate the United States Olympic hockey team's gold medal during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, USA. As indicted by the U.S. quarter also depicted in the photo, this is a very large "pin", roughly the size of a BlackBerry mobile phone. It is curious that the pin includes "#2" in the upper right corner of the text area atthe bottom of the pin because I have never seen a #1 pin (or any other numbered pin that would indicate this pin to e part of a series). The value of this pin is between $20.00 and $30.00 USD.

1992 Magique Olympic Mascot Hockey Pins
Today we have two mascot ice hockey pins from the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Each pin depicts the official Albertville mascot, Magique, playing hockey. However, one pin is a true cloisonné while the other is has a domed enamel finish. This is a good example of the differences in these two types of pin finishes. In my opinion, cloisonnés are the nicest pins and have the highest value. As for these two pins, I would value the cloisonné at $7.00 USD and the domed enamel pin at $5.00 USD.

2002 Laurie Artiss 6 Pin Hockey Nations Set
This six pin set was made by the Canadian company Laurie Artiss Ltd. for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Each pin in the set includes a hockey player in various poses as well as the flag of one of the following nations: Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States. Unfortunately, the set was not a complete participating nations set because it did not include pins for the eight other nations that competed in the Games: Belarus, Germany, Latvia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia or France. During the 2002 Games, I was able to obtain this set for $22.00 USD, though I have seen it sell for $70.00 USD since that time.

Each of the twelve hockey nation pins measures 24mm tall and 32mm wide, and includes the flag of one of the participating countries. Meanwhile, the round Coca-Cola centerpiece pins measure 19mm in diameter. All 14 pins have a clutch and post clasp and are inscribed on the backside as follows: "® The Coca-Cola Co., © LOOC ‘91, Premier China". I have seen this set sell for between $35.00 and $118.00 USD.

1992 Coca-Cola® Participating Hockey Nations Set
This is the Coca-Cola participating hockey nations 12-pin set from the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Each pin is 22mm tall and 26mm wide, and each has a domed etch-plate finish. The back of each pin is inscribed with "(m) COA Artiss-Calgary, Malaysia". I really cannot begin to put a value on this pin, as I have never actually seen all twelve pins sell as a complete set. I have actually seen just one of these pins sell for $31.00 USD, so the value of a complete set might just be outrageous.

1992 Generic Participating Hockey Nations Pin Set
This is one of three participating nation hockey pin sets produced for the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. Of the other two sets, one was produced for Coca-Cola which I will write about tomorrow, and the other was a Soviet Union set that I wrote about on May 5, 2011. Each pin in this set is 17mm tall and 26mm wide. The pins have clutch and post fasteners and a fine enamel or semi-cloisonne finish. The backside of each pin is inscribed with the following: (m) COA Artiss-Regina Taiwan. This set generally sells for between $20.00 and $65.00 USD.
