2002 Winter Olympics 10th Anniversary Celebration

Last night was the 2002 Winter Olympic Games celebration event at the Kearns Olympic Oval. In addition to a wonderful Olympic Celebration Show on Ice featuring both past and future Olympians, there were athletes signing autographs, figure skating and speed skating clinics, a curling clinic, 2002 memorabilia displays and, of course, pin trading. One of my favorite 2002 Olympic posters was also on display, which is the goaltender pictured here.

There were several Olympic pin trading tables set up and well known traders such as Janet Grissom, Eileen Brennan and Dolan Hudson (pictured in the black baseball cap) were on hand to mesmerize the crowds with their pin displays and certainly to trade a few Olympic pins.

At the celebration I was able to trade for the two pins pictured here, each of which feature an Olympic hockey figure.

The pin on the right is the original silver skyline athlete pin of which there were 6000 made, and the pin on the left is another Salt Lake City skyline pin featuring a hockey pictogram of which there were only 2002 made. The first pin has a value of $10.00 USD, and the second has a value of $12.00 USD.

2012 Salt Lake City Olympics 10th Anniversary Pin

Although this is not really a hockey pin, I am featuring it today because it reminds me of one of the most incredible Olympic hockey experiences of my life--the 2002 Winter Games. Currently, Salt Lake City, Utah is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its hosting of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. There have been numerous Olympic themed events including a ceremony to re-light the Olympic flame, athlete presentations and, of course, pin trading events. At the re-lighting ceremony there was even an announcement of the formation of an exploratory committee that will gauge interest in making a Salt Lake City bid for the 2022 Winter Games . . . that would be AWESOME!!! Last night, members of the Salt Lake Olympic Pin Club got together for dinner to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Games and to share stories of pin trading both from 2002 and from Olympic Games since then. It was a great night, and this anniversary experience has been a good reminder of the Olympic spirit that consumed our city in 2002.

1994 United States Olympic Hockey NOC Pin

This hockey pin is one of a multiple pin winter sport discipline set created for the United States Olympic team for the 1994 Winter Games held in Lillehammer, Norway. To me, this set of pins is one of the most unimaginative sets ever created for the USOC. Frankly, the pin is quite boring and because it is so easy to obtain its value is only about $5.00 USD, which is pretty low for any NOC pin.
